About Manassas, Virginia

Manassas is a town in northern Virginia. It’s known for the Manassas National Battlefield Park, site of 2 major Civil War battles and a landmark stone bridge, rebuilt in 1884. The Manassas Museum has exhibits on the Civil War and local history. Classical music, opera and theater are staged at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Ben Lomond Historic Site features a Federal-style plantation house and a rose garden.

Manassas (/məˈnæs əs/;[7] formerly Manassas Junction)[8] is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 37,821;[9] at the 2020 Census, this had grown to 42,772.[10] The city borders Prince William County, and the independent city of Manassas Park, Virginia. The Bureau of Economic Analysis includes both Manassas and Manassas Park with Prince William County for statistical purposes.

The City of Manassas has several important historic sites from the period 1850–1870. While Manassas is the county seat and surrounds the county courthouse that 38-acre (150,000 m2) site is county rather than city property.

The City of Manassas is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area and is in the Northern Virginia region.

Manassas is mainly served by I-66U.S. 29Virginia State Route 234 Business and Virginia State Route 28.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.9 square miles (25.6 km2), of which 9.9 square miles (25.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) (0.5%) is water.[15]

Manassas has a council-manager system of government. As of October 2021 the city manager is William Patrick Pate; the mayor is Michelle Davis-Younger; and the vice mayor is Pamela J. Sebesky.[1][2]

Manassas offers a number of city-held events as well as private and public museums, parks and monuments. The most notable regular city events are the First Friday festivals, wherein on the first Friday of every month the city will showcase local art as well as hold various themed activities. The city museum was opened in 1973 in preparation for the city’s centennial and seeks to document the city’s culture and history. Some of the other sites include:
