Seniors should get their vision and eyes checked at least once a year. In fact, some seniors should get their eyes checked every six months. Seniors’ vision or eye health can change frequently due to other health conditions, medications, and lifestyle factors. If it’s been awhile since your senior parent had their vision and eyes checked, now is a great time to schedule an appointment. Schedule an appointment for your senior parent if you or their in-home care provider notice any of these signs:
Trouble Seeing The TV
Is your senior loved one complaining they can’t see the picture on the TV? Or have they talked about getting a larger TV because they’re having trouble seeing it? That could indicate some changes in their vision that should be checked by an eye doctor. Maybe they just need a new prescription for their glasses, or maybe they need something more. Whenever there is a distinct change in a senior’s vision, they should get an eye exam.
Complaining About Dry, Itchy, Or Painful Eyes
If your senior loved one has been saying their eyes are dry, itchy, or painful, it’s a good idea to get their eyes checked. Dry eyes and many different things can cause itchy eyes, like allergies, medications, even having the heat on too high in the house can cause dry or painful eyes. But just in case it’s something else, your senior loved one should have an eye exam. Eye problems are much easier to deal with if they are caught early.
Redness or Swelling
If you or your in-home care provider have noticed red or red-patched eyes, call an eye doctor. The problem could be just dry eyes, aging, or something else that’s easy to treat. But it could be more serious, and you need to know for sure. Everyone gets red eyes occasionally, especially during allergy season. If your senior parent’s eyes are red or unusually red, schedule an eye exam. It’s better to have their eyes checked and know the problem than wait.
Headaches
Has your senior loved one been having headaches lately? Headaches can be caused by many factors, but vision changes and eye problems can be causes of headaches. Before you look for other causes of headaches, have an eye exam to rule out vision or eye problems. If the problem is with eyesight, the optometrist should help.
