Aging & Adult Services Description

Aging & Adult Services office offers supportive home and community services to eligible adults. Services continue to be available during the pandemic. Speak with a Certified Information and Referral Specialist Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Please leave a message or send an email.  To maintain confidentiality and to protect, please DO NOT EMAIL ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES REPORTS.

This Division also serves as the Area Agency on Aging and provides staff support for the Alexandria Commission on Aging.

 

ADSC Program Description

The Adult Day Services Center (ADSC) is a cost effective program designed to offer services to seniors 55 years and older who may need assistance and who may not want or cannot stay at home alone during the day. Despite the individual challenges seniors face, we encourage each person to be as independent as possible. Furthermore, the Center provides caregivers a needed break and the comfort of knowing that their loved one will be spending the day with new friends and activities. Transportation is available.

ADSC provides a complete week-day care program for up to 24 persons, which includes:

Activity staff consist of three full-time staff and one activity director. A registered nurse is available on site to monitor participants’ medical needs. Fees are on a sliding scale based on income. There is usually not a waiting list for this program.

Program participants must:

  • Be age 55 or over
  • Have a disability that prevents them from remaining alone during the day
  • Be able to use the bathroom with minimal assistance
  • Be able to respond to simple directions
  • Be able to function in a social setting

Persons with dementia such as Alzheimer’s Disease are appropriate for the program if they can interact socially. ADSC staff assess applicants individually to assure that they can participate successfully in the program.

 

Physical, Social & Mental Activities

Our program provides a wide variety of activities designed to meet the needs, abilities and interests of each participant. Activity staff consist of three full-time therapeutic recreational leaders, one full-time therapeutic recreational specialist and a host of volunteers. We work as a team to develop an individualized program plan for each person entering the program. Our program is designed to improve and/or maintain each participant’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional well being. We take pride in providing the highest level of care and quality programs that promote empowerment, education and fun!

 

Volunteers

Volunteers are an important part of our team. They contribute substantially to the variety and success of the activity program. It is through stimulation that we strive to maintain and enhance the participants’ awareness of the world around them. This is one of the reasons that volunteers are so important to our center. Volunteers provide extra attention that our participants need. Assisting with activities and field trips, friendly visiting and individual attention are all important ways of showing that you care. After all, what’s more valuable than the gift of friendship?

Volunteers engage in many of the activities listed below:

  • Assist with daily therapeutic activities
  • Assist the staff and participants during lunch
  • Help with arts and crafts
  • Assist with special events
  • Help provide supervision during outings

Monthly Caregiver Support Group – closed until further notice

This group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Adult Day Services Center from 4 – 5:30 p.m.  Participants are full-time caregivers or family members or friends providing part-time caregiving. Participants share their experiences, provide support for each other and receive resources to assist them with caregiving. 

 

Monthly Caregiver Medication Education Group – closed until further notice

This group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the Adult Day Services Center from 4 – 5:30 p.m.  The group is available to all City residents.  Participants will learn about drug interactions, medication side effects, commonly prescribed medications and tips about what  to ask your loved ones physician.
