ToggleAt IncrediCare Home Care, we are passionate about the hands-on training provided to the Care Pros.
While much of the monthly training requires discussions and lectures on the theoretical approach to care, from time to time, we put those theories to the test.
For June’s monthly training, Care Pros were tasked to effectively communicate with a client who suffers from dementia while completing the day’s responsibilities. They were asked to help prepare the client for the day, use the restroom, go for a drive, participate in one cognitive activity, and then put her back to bed, all the while navigating around misconduct, anxiety, and unsafe behaviors. Care Pros were tested and then guided on how to redirect the client when she is trying to take pills out of the reminder box because they were her “candy.”
One of the most important points to train on when working with any neurocognitive disorder clients is to never argue. Whether the client’s request is safe or even feasible, Care Pros are always encouraged never to engage in a negative way. During the training, the client insisted on driving her vehicle to go see her mother. At 92, her license had been revoked, and her mother had long since passed. Instead of arguing those points, each Care Pro found unique ways to convince the client to let them drive and redirected the conversation where it was not upsetting.
While some clients have families nearby to check on them in between IncrediCare being in the home, others do not. In all cases, IncrediCare’s goal is to give all families peace of mind while clients are in our care. To do that, monthly in-person training is mandated as a term of employment. IncrediCare engages in quality assurance visits to ensure both the client’s and the agency’s expectations of exceptional care are being provided.
Care Pros are set up for success through hands-on training like this.
