Shedding Light on Alzheimer's
December 21st is known as the longest night of the year. During that date, we experience the shortest day and the longest night because earth is farthest away from the sun. It was also the night Tribute at the Glen, an assisted living facility in Woodbridge, VA hosted their second annual A December to Remember event. It was a night where local businesses were invited to light up the outside grounds of the facility in a friendly decorating competition. It was a night to also shed light on a dark disease.
According to Alzheimer’s Association, “More than 6 million Americans of all ages have Alzheimer’s. An estimated 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2023.” IncrediCare prides itself in training all caregivers in the disease and joining any causes that spread knowledge and support to families of those suffering from it. The Alzheimer’s Association held two luminary ceremonies throughout the night for guests to participate in remembrance of loved ones who lost their battles with the disease.
The event hosted Mr. and Mrs. Claus, The Grinch, and several other fun characters. There was an outdoor train ride for guests to enjoy the decorations, a mini ice rink, hot cocoa, s’mores station, and many themed rooms with activities. Guests and residents of all ages enjoyed the night, ending it with some tunes sung by an Elvis impersonator.
