Encouraging Motor Skills

Discover how IncrediCare uses creative activities to encourage motor skills, independence, and meaningful engagement for older adults.
Encouraging Motor Skills Through Creative Activities

As we grow older, it’s natural for both fine and gross motor skills to gradually change. But with the right support and meaningful activities, there are many ways to encourage movement, coordination, and independence. After all, as the saying goes, “Use it or lose it!”

Encouraging Motor Skills Through Creative Activities At IncrediCare, we believe that staying active doesn’t have to mean going to the gym or following a traditional exercise routine. Sometimes, it can be as simple as picking up a paintbrush, placing a sticker, or carefully arranging a flower.

During the intake process, our Intake Coordinator takes the time to understand each client’s abilities, challenges, and individual needs. This information helps our Care Pros develop personalized care plans that incorporate activities designed to encourage both fine and gross motor skills—always at a level that is comfortable, appropriate, and enjoyable for the client.

Encouraging Motor Skills Through Creative Activities This same philosophy extends beyond our clients and into the communities we serve. When IncrediCare partners with senior communities for special events, we consider the different challenges residents may experience with mobility, coordination, and dexterity. Our goal is to create activities that are not only fun and social but also provide opportunities to keep those skills engaged.

Recently, IncrediCare partnered with Sunrise at Silas Burke House for a creative afternoon centered around fine motor skills and self-expression. Residents designed their own bookmarks using delicate pressed flowers and an assortment of colorful stickers.

Carefully picking up flowers, positioning each piece, and placing stickers may seem like small tasks, but they provided residents with an opportunity to practice hand-eye coordination and dexterity while creating something uniquely their own.

And the creativity didn’t stop there!

Encouraging Motor Skills Through Creative Activities As residents worked on their masterpieces, live music filled the room, creating a cheerful atmosphere and adding an extra element of enjoyment to the afternoon. There was something special about seeing residents gathered together, listening to music, sharing smiles, and taking pride in their creations.

Once the bookmarks were complete, each one was laminated so residents could preserve their artwork and use it in one of their favorite books—a small keepsake that can bring back memories of a wonderful afternoon.
